On a very narrow and very deep building site along a popular lakeshore, this family lodge for 6 families required the interlocking layering of upper floor spaces, each with their own special orientation, to create lodging suites that provide privacy and parity for all visiting families. Only the Owners suite occupied the main floor. A bridge, supported on two, 28’ long x 18” x 30” Douglas fir beams, carries a collection of train car double bunks for grandchildren to create a community of their own. Timber frame, Post and Beam, and conventional stick and masonry construction combined for a rustic, yet refined home whose comfortable scale defies its complex and sophisticated internal program. Materially delightful and touchable in every room, this is a Northwoods retreat for the senses.
