A strange” plan book” house on a jaw droppingly beautiful site left only the original foundations as a start to this completely reimagined project. 70% of the original house was carefully recycled and repurposed. Specific local and distant characteristics of the site, hidden by the original houses’ inattention, were defined, and celebrated. The new project savored its close relationship to its 2000’ of rugged shoreline and hidden coves. Entire building sections changed to meet the grade of a sloping bluff and equally, other spaces towered over the sites’ highest point of land, undermined by a gigantic historic ice cave, and they faced, with panoramic views, into the northeast wind and the far fetch of Lake Superior. Every view to the site is breathtaking, with materials selected to complement the visual palette. This project was a labor of love.
